Incense is a mixture of aromatic organic substances, which can be ignited and then emits a fragrance considered pleasant. Incense also refers to the resin of the incense tree. The original meaning of the word incense is "wine smoke" (smoke to dedicate). Nevertheless, the word is pronounced with an extended first syllable, as weed smoke.
Rods
Especially for domestic use incense sticks are often used. These are wooden sticks around which a flammable mixture of incense is rolled. This mixture consists of aromatic substances as well as a binder and substances that promote combustion. The fragrances can consist of finely ground resins, essential oil and other fragrances. The sticks are lit at the top and burn (depending on the size) in 10 to 45 minutes.
Cones
The composition of the cones is comparable to that of the sticks. In this case the mixture is not rolled around a stick, but into a cone. The cone is also lit from above and burns slowly.
Tibetan incense
Tibetan incense is used in Tibetan Buddhism and the Bön. It contains aromas of herbs and contains several, sometimes 30 ingredients. Incense is an important element in Tibetan culture, and in Tibetan medicine incense is attributed to healing power. Besides Tibet itself it is mainly used in Nepal and Bhutan.
Grain incense
Grain incense generally contains no binder and no substances that promote combustion. It consists of coarsely ground or even larger grains of resin, herbs and fragrant woods. Provided that sufficient porous raw materials are used, essential oil can be added.
Grain incense is kept in a small ship in the Catholic and Orthodox liturgy and burned on incandescent coals during mass. It is a proof of honour. During a procession incense precedes the cross, which is flanked by two candles. For home use, the incense is usually used in a simple metal or earthenware holder.
Rope incense
Rope incense is the most original form of incense. Herbs wrapped in rice paper.
Rope incense falls under medicinal incenses. Free of toxins and suitable to breathe. Not only not harmful, but it is used in Tibet and Nepal to speed up the healing process.
